1977 Irwin 52 Cutter Rigged Ketch

St. Petersburg, Florida, United States

The spacious, updated interior of this Irwin 52 is ideal for use as a live-aboard or for your extended cruising pleasure. "Solaris"(aka Distant Drummer, Ted Irwin’s personal yacht) is a boat that was stiffened and strengthened at the request of the designer, Ted Irwin. The additional stiffening is visible in the bow sections and noted in recent surveys.  Despite it’s beam and heavy displacement the hull sections provide an easily driven hull under both power and sail.

Many major up grades were completed, including the Decks were removed and received new Masts (2002), New Mast Step,  Oversized Standing Rigging, Generator fairly new with about 500 hours, Vacu Flush Heads, Stainless Steel Hatches, SS Davits and Corian Countertops. Two new Selden masts (with Furlex internal roller furling), Selden booms, "rod kicker" vangs with gas support, upgraded over size standing rigging, halyards, sheets. Hood main 10.2 oz. Dacron and Hood 7.5 oz. Dacron mizzen sails (2003). Both Hood sails have triple stitching, Duroseam protection and Antal clew blocks. With this modification, all of Solaris' four working sails are roller furling and can be easily managed by a 2-person crew.

Other additions include a New (2016) dodger/bimini combination with full Eisen-glass panels, dodger wind screen privacy cover and side screens.  Also, the galley was completely renovated with Corian work surfaces and back splash, a Force 10 4-burnerstove/oven/broiler and a Norcold dual 2-door, dual voltage standing refrigerator. Additional pantry storage was incorporated under the Corian breakfast bar.  Corian surfaces and fixtures added to both heads. (Forward head has stand-alone shower, aft head has a full tub/shower combination.) Both Heads are VacuFlush, and have been updated with plastic lines.

* Solaris' layout is the "owner's version" and sleeps 6 people very comfortably in four state rooms. The aft cabin has a queen with en-suite head, the forward v-berth is a generous double and the two other cabins contain a single and a 3/4 double.
